During the Second World War, the Channel Islands were occupied by the German forces for five years, from 1940 to 1945 which was know as The Occupation. On May 9th 1945, British forces liberated the Channel Islands. Hence the fact that that we will never forget and indeed celebrate this important day in the history of not only the Channel Islands, but Great Britain as a whole.
As Sir Winston Churchill said during his historic and moving broadcast of 8th May 1945 when he announced that German armed forces surrendered unconditionally on May 7 and hostilities in Europe ended officially at midnight, May 8. 1945:
….. Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight to-night (Tuesday, May 8), but in the interests of saving lives the “Cease fire” began yesterday to be sounded all along the front, and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed to-day ……
