Trouble House

I have been to the new look Trouble House Café Bar 3 times in the last two months and had exactly the same meal every time! Double Gloucester Cheese Omelette with warm new potatoes and rocket salad. A delicious combination. Well, if hits the spot, why go for anything else?

The Trouble House is located just outside Tetbury in Gloucestershire on the Cirencester Road. In fact is has been there under one guise or another for 300 years reviving the hungry and thirsty when, all those years ago, it was originally called the Wagon and Horses.
It changed hands again at the end of 2013 and new owner, Sally David, opened the new look Trouble House early in 2014 and she has unquestionably got the ingredients right for the current market.

Billed as a Cafe Bar, the Trouble House seems to offer a great deal more. Opening at 08.00 a.m. to cater for the breakfast trade and lunch, staying open until 5.p.m. during the week, currently only operating in the evenings on Friday and Saturday. The menu offers a choice of a full blown meal, with wine or local ales, or you could go for a cup of coffee and a choice of a profusion of cakes that are worth getting fat for! Especially Sally’s infamous chocolate cake. If you can’t fit in a cake whilst you are there, take one with you!

The lunchtime menu is very reasonably priced and there is a Children’s Menu. At the time of writing, I have not eaten there for dinner but with main courses such as new season lamb rump with Dauphinoise potatoes and minted green vegetables, I know what I will be tantalising my taste buds with when I do go.

Sally trained at the Tante Marie Cookery School, then went on to cook in English country houses and the Cayman Islands, returning to Gloucestershire to set up Sally’s Kitchen in Cirencester, followed by the award-winning café, The Kitchen, in Minchinhampton.

The icing on Sally’s cake is the warm welcome I guarantee you will receive. The staff are all delightful, attentive and intent on making your gourmet experience one that you will remember. The decor is informal, bright and the ambience, like the staff, very welcoming. There are always freshly cut flowers on the bar. A nice touch.

If you are looking for somewhere relax with good food, this is where you should be. If you are looking for silver service, starchy table linen, Maitra D’s and Sommeliers, carry on driving!

The good news is that Trouble House due to open for Sunday lunch during the school summer holidays and the garden is currently enjoying a makeover to accommodate al fresco dining during the summer months.

Overall this is one of the best new dining experiences I have come across for a very long time and Sally and her team deserve to do exceptionally well. I actually went for the fourth time yesterday and had something different, Slow Cooked Ham Hock with dry cider and whole grain mustard sauce. Yum!

To recap, The Trouble House is currently open Monday to Friday – 8a.m.– 5p.m., Saturday – 5p.m.. Friday and Saturday Evenings 7p.m. to 10 p.m – be aware that the kitchen closes at 9.30 p.m. If Sunday lunch appeals, give them a call to see when they are starting.
