Young American gored by bull in Salamanca – STOP BULLFIGHTING NOW!

February 16th 2015

My parents made a very bad mistake taking me to a bullfight when I was about 8.  I vaguely remember being excited about seeing the Matadors, Toreadors and Picadors outside the bull ring dressed in their colourful costumes.  Half an hour later having been subjected to witnessing a very small, young bull being provoked and tortured until it dropped, I came out of the bull ring emotionally traumatised, but at least I wasn’t dragged out unceremoniously like the dead bull.

The horses don’t always come out of it too well either.

Let’s face it, bullfighting is barbaric, akin to bear-bating and along with bull running, it should have been banned a long time ago.

Apparently between 45,000 to 50,000 people flock to Salamanca for a four day bull fighting and bull running fiesta. Young Benjamin Miller from Georgia was one of them.

For those of you don’t know what bull running is …

First of all, you advertise well in advance and cram as many people as possible in your town.  Then there are the Mozos, who are fearless (or barking mad) young men who throw themselves into the path of six or  more pretty grumpy bulls and run around the town.  What could possibly go wrong?

Pamploma’s Running of the Bulls is probably best known of these events as each July over a million people descend on the city to witness the demise of many bulls.  Each year dozens of people are gored or trampled and 15 recorded as having been killed.   Of course, the highlight of each day is to  subject the same bulls that have been rampaging the streets to further humiliation and of course death in the bull ring.  But don’t just take my word for it.

Health and safety clearly is not an issue.  We very much hope that 20 year old Benjamin Miller who was running with the bulls in Salamanca, makes a full recovery.

Thank you very much for visiting my niche-less blog! If you have time before you leave, would love you to tell us what you think. All the best, Tessa Barrie
