Humour🤣 Life Writing

Write to Work for the Right Price

Writing a Blog is one thing, but writing a book is a totally different ball game and at times it can be a very lonely one.   I should know, I am 14 Chapters into my Work In Progress.  I am completely alone, wrestling with those exasperating characters at all hours of the day and night.

According to an article written for The Guardian in 2015,  60% of us in dear old Blighty consider that being an author would be their dream job.  Well think on … it’s not just having the ability to churn out a few thousand words, it is how you deliver and mould those words into what it is you have to say.  Are your words compelling and addictive enough for people to a) actually want to read your words of fabricated or factual wisdom in the first place ?  And, most importantly b) are the discerning book buying public prepared to pay to read the words that have kept you up all day and night for the last few years?  That is the rub.

I have read a compelling piece today which is doing it’s rounds on Social Media … Advice From Some Old People and you Young Un’s out there would do well to read it.  The sage advice they share at number 5 on the list jumped out at me.

People always say, “Make sure you get a job doing what you love!”.  But that isn’t the best advice.  The right job is the job you love some days, can tolerate most days and still pays the bills.  Almost nobody has a job they love every day.

I do love doing it.  Especially when those delicious Purple Patches envelope you and you can write around the clock.  I tolerate it even when I am trying to write my way out of the foggy Writer’s Block days.  But, for those of us out of JKR’s league, does all this blood, sweat and tears actually pay the bills?

We know that one of the more revered blogging sites have this week confirmed that they offer their contributors visibility, promotion and distribution.   Whoopee-do!  We writers/bloggers do like to see our names in lights, but cannot live on bread alone and as fresh air …

My Royalties just about pay for the occasional meal out, but I will never stop trying to write a damn good novel in the hope that, one day, I will get the ingredients right.

Thank you very much for visiting my niche-less blog! If you have time before you leave, would love you to tell us what you think. All the best, Tessa Barrie
