Xia Boyu is a sixty-nine year old double amputee who has just succeeded in climbing Mount Everest... on his fifth attempt.

“Who told you it was too late? And more importantly, why did you choose to believe them?”
Richelle E. Goodrich, Making Wishes

In praise of Xia Boyu who, at sixty-nine years old has just conquered Mount Everest on his fifth attempt; his previous four attempts spanned a period of forty-three years.

His age would suggest that this is a remarkable achievement, but when you take into consideration that he is a double amputee, it takes his accomplishment to a different level… in his case, 8,848 meters (29,029 ft) above sea level.

Last year, 634 people made it to the top and seven died trying.

In 1975, Xia lost both his legs from below the knee from frostbite, during an attempt to climb Mount Everest, having lent his sleeping bag to a teammate.  But he never gave up on his dream and his son, Cloud Xia, announced today that “My Dad reached Everest at 8:26 Nepal time!!! Has realized his 40 years dream!!!”

Monumental achievement… Xia Boyu – double amputee scales Mount Everest

So for those of you like me, who prefer to keep our feet closer to sea level and who are dithering about whether or not we have left it too late to achieve our dreams, take a leaf out Xia Boyu’s book and ever give up.
