Toward the latter part of 2018, the content of my blog started to change. I wasn’t aware a metamorphosis was taking place, because my approach to blogging has always been pantser-style, like everything else I have written to date. Lost Blogs has always sprung from random ideas. On a whim, depending on the mood I’m in, on a bus, or when things got under my skin. So I could never be categorised as a niche blogger. I don’t know enough about anything to be niche anyway.
Things started to change when my blogs became ‘oh woe is me’ posts, about the struggles and pitfalls of writing a book. Yes, my book. The one I had in my head for thirty years odd years, which I needed to, finally, get out of my head and on to my hard drive. When I started writing it in June 2016, even though I’d been thinking about it for all those years, I still approached it pantser-style. So, it had to be re-written countless times. A time-consuming and frustrating process, but I am sure I’m not the first would-be novelist to make mistakes, including not doing any plotting.
During the first six months of 2019, I was obsessed finishing this novel and, again, my blog reflected that this is all I was doing on the writing front. I finally ‘finished’ it in June this year and instead of taking a break, I launched myself into my second, well-plotted, novel. Time is short when you start writing novels at my age, I need to get on with it.
I’ve tried everything over the years, poetry in my teens, journalism, I’ve written a factual book, I’ve written songs, before turning my hand to blogging to promote my own music, as well as other peoples. Now, in my heart, I know I want to write fiction. I think I always have but I’ve never allowed myself to dream. Which is ridiculous, because I’m always telling other people they should.
“Dare to dream, for in the daring there is defiance to live beyond your circumstances”
So, maybe, I have found my niche; but am I any good at writing fiction? Only time will tell.
So, as 2019 rolls into 2020, changes are afoot. It will be a new chapter in the life of this pantser-style blog as its creator evolves into the Plotter she always knew she should be.
