MASKING UP: For Peace of Mind

Since the beginning of the global coronavirus pandemic, advice regarding wearing face masks has differed.

The World Health Organisation’s recent guidelines are:

  • if you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly

As someone who always errs on the side of caution, before all the Governmental advice started circulating, I ordered some face masks and a box of gloves from Amazon. They were despatched almost immediately, but they still haven’t arrived, because I hadn’t realised at the time that they were coming from China.

Scientists still don’t know if wearing a mask will prevent you from contracting COVID-19 but, the latest Jersey Governmental brief is that cloth faced masks are strongly advised.

Homemade masks are being worn everywhere.  The bizarre, the ridiculous, and the desperate.

Whether wearing a face mask will stop you from contracting COVID-19 or not, covering up your nose and mouth makes sense – even if I look like like a bonkers blogging buffoon. I will work on a more stylish look for my second attempt at a homemade mask. As they say, where I come from, owt’s better than nowt.

In my mind, it’s peace of mind, and it’s got to be better than inhaling anything COVID-19 related.  Stay safe everyone.

‘We have previously said that we expect up to 80% of Islanders to catch the virus. However, what is in our control is to flatten the curve – to extend the period of time in which we see positive cases of COVID-19.’
